There's a small town in central Texas, goes by the name of Troy.
They got a mascot, jus' like all the other schools round here. 'Cept they got a bum name for a mascot.
They're the Troy Trojans.
Now, I mightn't be the most studied person round these parts, but I remember a thing or two from my days in high school.
And the Trojans…lost the war.
I recall a few years back there were some things that happened at that school that seemed like they'd happened all before. Something seemed very familiar about all the events, like I knew what was gonna happen before it did. Like someone had writ a story I'd already read and all the kids were just the characters in it.
Well, I'll tell it to you like I remember it. Not like those other guys, those media people. I was actually there.
You see, I been the janitor here at Troy for a long, long time. I seen it all, I heard it all, but I sure don't know it all. So you'll just have to trust me that what I say is the truth. You might hear it differently in other places, 'specially if you read the local news when all this stuff happened, but they weren't really there. Nope, not like me…I was there when everything happened.
It was only 'bout a decade ago that it all started, and only 'bout a year ago that it finally ended. And it all began with just two kids. Who woulda' thought that so much could happen with such a small start? Makes me think of small embers that become ragin' fires, but I'm gettin' off topic.
The prettiest girl in all of Troy was Helena. She was popular, all the teachers liked her, and all the boys wanted to date her. When all this started, she'd been dating the quarterback. She knew she was with him because they were expected to be together. She didn't actually feel anything for him. They were, of course, homecoming king and queen. They would have been prom king and queen, but then the war began.
As with most couples I seen at this school, just about the only thing that ever made couples break up was that they found someone else more interesting, better looking, or more popular to date. Since Helena'd been dating the most interesting, best looking, most popular boy of her class, and yet still didn't have any feelings for him, she decided there would be no one for her until college, or even later.
Then Perry came into the picture.
Perry was the all-state running back for the Greenville Stallions.
The Greenville Stallions are the archrivals of the Troy Trojans.
